IKEA Boaxel Closet in Boys’ Shared Bedroom

For my February House to Home Project, I decided to tackle three closets in our home that have been driving me a bit batty. It was the perfect time to do a few closet resets since we worked on the boys’ bedroom refresh in January. That left their closet ready to be reorganized, which meant stealing a few components from my daughter’s closet to make the most out of our boys’ shared space. That’s why I love the versatility of the IKEA BOAXEL closet systems – you can mix and match as you need to. Let’s see how this closet reset turned out in the boys’ room!

What is the IKEA BOAXEL Closet System?

If you’re unfamiliar, the IKEA BOAXEL product is a versatile open storage system that can be used in many different spaces. We’ve personally used them in our kids’ closets, and in our primary bedroom closet. You can configure the style of your design based on your taste in color ways, space requirements, and desired aesthetic. It was a goal of mine, post-house-renovation, to eliminate the need for dressers in bedrooms. I’d rather have the space, and it forces us to be intentional about how many belongings we have and not stockpile items in drawers just because there’s space to do so.

While this system isn’t a custom, built-in storage creation, I’ve found that it is great quality, sturdy, and the versatility is unmatched. The downfall of IKEA products is the lack of detail in the instructions (and the fact that you install it all yourself). That’s where people like me come in and help the greater good with detailed blog posts and reviews. LOL

Details for our Boys’ Shared Closet

For our boys’ closet, we have a space that is just over 6′ x 3′ x 8′. This is plenty of space for the IKEA BOAXEL Closet System that we purchased. This is the specific listing on the IKEA website that we started with as we planned out the components that would work best for our family and lifestyle (we use the white/oak color way). You can read more about the initial install of this BOAXEL closet system in this blog post. It has a lot of great details!

Okay, so we installed this about two years ago, and it’s seen a few changes since then. The biggest change is that both of our boys now share this space, so we needed to make the closet functional for two little boys.

Boys’ IKEA BOAXEL Closet Reset Today

Knowing that both boys will be using this closet for the foreseeable future, I knew we need to be very intentional with how we reset the space. I knew we’d need more drawers for each boy, and I also wanted to adjust the shelves to make them more accessible and functional. You can watch a reel on my Instagram account that I did to show this process here.

How I Organize the Ikea BOAXEL Closet for two boys

I love how it turned out! Just a little elbow grease and you can transform your space for a new phase of life that serves you better. Now, I love seeing how other people organize the contents of their closets. I thought I’d do that for you, too. Let’s take a deep dive into what goes where, and how I make this closet work in our shared boys’ room:

As the boys grow, I’ll have to adjust to make room for larger clothing items. That’s why I love the BOAXEL closet system from IKEA; as the kids grow, the closet can grow with them. You can go see how I reset my daughter’s room here.
