Monthly Shopping Trip – Fave Five, September 2020

September FFF Pin 2020

Oh, Sweet September! Thanks for taking a gander at this Monthly Shopping Trip – Fave Five post today! We are gearing up for our first big family trip – we’re heading to the Smoky Mountains. I am so excited! So, this month’s Fave Five will be centered around family travel.

I’ll also apologize now because many of these items that I got from Sam’s Club are no longer in stores. I’ve tried my best to find links through other sources for you.

Fave Five #1 – Mindworks Brain Puzzles

We’ve got a loooonnnnggg car-ride ahead of us. Once I saw these cool books, I knew these would serve as a great activity for Eric and I to keep busy as a passenger (instead of scrolling aimlessly) on our way to the Smoky Mountains.

I think it’s safe to say that we use the opposite side of our brain (left vs. right side), so these books will be a great way to keep our minds busy and learning. We haven’t broken these in yet, but I’ll be sure to report back once we do!

Price – $9.98

Link: I got nothing… you can find these on Amazon, but they are crazy expensive. Sam’s doesn’t have them in-store anymore, either. I’m sorry! Keep an eye out for them, or find a similar book!

Fave Five #2 – Melissa & Doug Hiking Activity Kit

This is why one should not go to Target outside of Monthly Shopping Trip time. Haha! However, this was kind of still a part of my MST, and it’s a heck of a find!

I happened upon this little Melissa & Doug Hiking Kit, and I could not resist. It’s the perfect activity to take along with us on our trip to the Smoky Mountains! Myles is going to love it, and there are two little booklets, so Gracelyn can have her fun right along with him.

I can’t wait to surprise them with this one!

Price – $9.99 @ Target

Fave Five #3 – Paw Patrol Storybook Desk-to-go

Sam’s Club always has the coolest things! Coincidentally, they had this fun Paw Patrol lap-desk in-store right as I was gathering items for our trip. This is going to be a great little activity set for our car ride down to TN.

Price – $14.98

Link: Looks like they’re out of Paw Patrol, but here is one for Minnie, Puppy Dog Pals, and Frozen 2.

Fave Five #4 – 6-in-1 Fun Pack Card Games for kids

We desperately need some card games to start playing with the kids. This set of six games was a perfect solution at an excellent price point! I’m looking forward to playing a couple of these games on our trip with Myles.

Price – $5.97

Fave Five #5 – 6 Pack Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle for Kids

Trying to find things for a one-year-old to do on a long trip is difficult! Their attention-spans are so short at this age. My strategy for keeping Gracelyn occupied going into our trip is to give her things that will keep her hands and eyes busy, with zero chance of a mess.

I thought these simple jigsaw puzzles would be perfect for her little hands, and they’re not so small that there’s a choking hazard or a million pieces that fall between our seats. I’m also hoping to set her up with lots of books. She loves looking through books right now.

Price – $18.99

Bonus Fave

I got this National Park specific book for our trip to the Smoky Mountains. I thought it would be a great addition to our hiking adventures, and I’m sure Myles will get a kick out of it. It’s called, “Who Pooped in the Park?” It’s all about tracking animals based on the tracks and scat you find on your journey.

Price – $10.99

That Does It

I know that this month was pretty kid-focused, but I hope all you Mama’s out there have some fresh ideas for gifts, traveling, or to add to your toy rotation! Let me know if you have any of these items and what you think!

Until next month,

-Mackenzy

The next time you visit Pella, make sure you add @ The next time you visit Pella, make sure you add @thistles_pella to your list of stops! My friend, Keisha, with @1oakiowa and I ventured over there and had a great time exploring the town!

Thanks to Thistles for making this trip extra special with a mini tour of the tulips around town that you can purchase for your own home gardens at pellatulipbulbs.com!

Which tulip is your favorite? I can’t pick just one, but I’m always drawn to the fringe-edge varieties!šŸ˜

I had the best time getting a glimpse behind the s I had the best time getting a glimpse behind the scenes of Pella this week, as they welcome visitors for Tulip Time (May 1-3)!šŸ’ It was even more fun to go with my friend, Keisha from @1oakiowa!

Alie, with @thistles_pella, shared so much information about tulips and their rich history in Pella. It was so cool to learn more about the different varieties blooming around town!

I was even more excited to learn that they have a select variety of tulips that you can order on-line for your very own garden, sourced directly from the Netherlands!šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’ve been building my perennial beds from scratch the past few seasons. I’m thinking more tulips are needed! I’ve got my eye on a couple different blends that I saw in-person in Pella!šŸ˜

You can order through July 31st, and you should receive them in time for fall planting! Give Thistles Flower Market a follow and visit pellatulipbulbs.com to get your tulips ordered for 2026!šŸ’

I think about how much I’ve learned about myself I think about how much I’ve learned about myself in the past eight years often…this is a big one. Recognizing when you’re simply TIRED. Not depressed, not lazy, not worthless, etc.

Sleep and rest are essential to functioning well, especially in the world we live in today.🫠 Give yourself permission to 1ļøāƒ£ recognize when you’re tired and 2ļøāƒ£ actually rest!

Love ya, mean it!😘

Follow for more ways to live simply and seasonally Follow for more ways to live simply and seasonally…with kids!šŸ˜

My husband built this mud kitchen with scrap wood one weekend. It only takes a couple of hours, and you really don’t need a grand master plan…just use what you have and make it work for you!

Then, the kids and I had fun thrifting some pans and utensils! Of course, it’s been well worn in and I didn’t have a chance to get video/pics when it was fresh and aesthetically pleasing for sharing!šŸ« šŸ™ƒšŸ™„

But, we might try to clean it off, have the kids paint it all, and then reset it and possibly add a back wall with hooks and shelving! I’m not making promises…but it could happen.šŸ˜‚ And if it does, I’ll be sure to share ā€œprettyā€ pics and video!

I can’t wait to see how many memories the kids make in this outdoor play area in the coming months! We’ve cleared more timber for them to have a ā€œhideoutā€ which has now evolved into having separate rooms/spaces for each kid to live, and a kitchen area! So fun!

Let me know if you have a mud kitchen, or if you plan to build one this year! Long live summer and outdoor living!

If you struggle to get your walls filled with thin If you struggle to get your walls filled with things that take you from house to home, listen up! I get major decision paralysis when it comes to choosing photos that I want on my walls. So, my biggest tip is to get your frames and artwork up for your gallery wall FIRST, even if they don’t have photos in them yet!

This makes the process SO much easier and more enjoyable (if I’m being honest)!šŸ™ƒ It was so easy to choose photos for this corner gallery wall once everything was up and I could clearly see what size of photos I needed. It also allows you to visualize the project as a whole, so you can get a feel for which photos will look best overall!
