This is the first time I’ve put together a full mood board for a space in our home. It was so much fun and really helped me to visualize the space. Have you ever done one before? Let’s take a look at our Basement Renovation Mood Board!
Basement Backstory
First, a little backstory. When we began our extensive home renovation two years ago, we started here, with our basement. Except, there was no basement. Haha! The only “basement” we had was the original basement of the home (built-in 1896), which had to be accessed from the outside and was not in great condition, cosmetically. When we dreamed up our plans for our home, we definitely wanted to incorporate more living space, and use the old portion of our basement for storage. It was also a priority to make both spaces accessible from inside the house.
Basement Renovation
Ironically, this is where it all began. We broke ground on November 1, 2019. You can read more extensively about the whole thing here, but we basically dug out and lifted a portion of the existing part of our home to create this basement area. And here we are now, piecing it all back together and finishing up what we started. Our priority was to get our main level finished first, so that has been our focus.
I’ve been dreaming this space up since we dug it out. Now it’s really fun to finally see it all come together. The overall mood for the space is to create an industrial, moody, and cozy space. The main purpose of this space is for additional living areas! We are a family of five, so having this extra space will be nice.
We debated back and forth on the color for the exposed ceiling down here. Ultimately, we decided to go darker (not stark black though). We are so happy with the color we chose (we also tried Gauntlet Gray, but it was too muddy looking for what we were going for). For the walls, we’re just starting with a nice clean white. We may add accents in the future, but we didn’t want it to seem dungeon-y. This also makes the most of the natural light we have down here.
Basement Layout
There is a large living room area that adjoins a play space (which can easily be converted to a fourth bedroom in the future). We’re looking forward to many cozy family movie nights and game nights. I’m also looking forward to using the play space daily as a stay-at-home mom (and keeping the toys better contained in one area)!
We also envision using this space for entertaining. With that in mind, we designed a kitchenette/wet bar along one wall, complete with a small sink, microwave, dishwasher, and mini-fridge/freezer. There is also a full bathroom and another little nook that may eventually have extra bar seating for guests or buffet-type serving space.
We did fix up the old portion of the basement last year. It turned out really great considering where we started! We cleaned everything out, primed and painted walls and ceiling, and then epoxy-coated the floors. This all made a tremendous difference in how we can use the space and we’re so grateful to have this dedicated storage space!
I’m also really excited about the stairwell leading down into the basement! It’s so bright and I’m so glad we decided to add the large window. Lot’s of fun things coming to this space, and I’ve included elements for its design in the mood board, too.

I am so excited to get this all put together. And I’m even more excited to finally use the space and enjoy it as a family. I just know we’re going to make so many great memories down there over the years.
Check back soon to see more finished spaces and how everything came together. You can also follow along on Instagram! We’ll see how close I get to mimicking the mood board…things change and that’s okay! It’s fun to dream up spaces and then actually get them all put together to see how your vision and design evolve.
Thanks for stopping by!
